I lived on Hainan, China's island province in the South China Sea for three years. Although more and more visitors are going there every year, it still feels somewhat "undiscovered." Most travelers go to Sanya, the beach resort in the south. However, if you're more adventurous, the interior of the island is an amazing place. Hot springs. Rice wine. Small festivals in indigenous Li villages. Because it's so hot, Hainan is very much a nighttime place. Things don't really get moving till after dark and are active until the early hours of morning. I've been back in the U.S. for a year now, but still keep up my connections with people I met over there. I plan to go back at the first opportunity.
